Symptoms

Signs the dryer needs a technician

Most dryer trouble shows up in one of these six ways.

Runs, but no heat

The drum turns, the timer counts down and the clothes come out cold.

Needs two or three cycles

Towels are still damp after a full run, even with a clean lint screen.

Won't start

The light comes on, you press start, and the drum doesn't move.

Squealing or thumping

A high-pitched squeal or a steady thump comes from inside the cabinet.

Shuts off early

It stops a few minutes in, then runs again once it has cooled down.

Burning smell

A hot or scorched smell during the cycle. Stop the dryer and unplug it before you call.

Typical causes

Where dryer problems usually start

Blocked vent duct

Lint packs the duct, the dryer overheats, trips its safety fuse and takes longer every week.

How we check it

We measure airflow at the outside vent and check the duct run behind the dryer.

Failed element, igniter or gas valve coils

Electric dryers lose heat when the element burns open; gas models when the igniter or valve coils give out.

How we check it

We test the element or igniter with a meter and watch the gas valve open on a call for heat.

Worn rollers, belt or idler pulley

These parts wear a little with every load and are behind most of the noise.

How we check it

We open the cabinet, turn the drum by hand and check each roller and the belt tension.

How we diagnose

Inside a dryer diagnosis

Diagnostic checklist

  • Checks both legs of the 240-volt supply on electric dryers
  • Tests the thermal fuse, thermostats and heating circuit
  • Measures how freely air moves through the vent
  • Inspects the rollers, belt, idler pulley and drum glides
  • On gas models, tests the igniter, valve coils and flame sensor

Problem: Drum turned, but no heat at all.

Repair: The thermal fuse had blown behind a lint-choked roof vent. Replaced the fuse and showed the owner the blockage.

Useful tips

Worth checking before you call

Check these first

  • Look at the breaker panel. An electric dryer uses a double breaker, and if one half trips, the drum still turns but the heat stays off.
  • Pull out the lint screen and hold it to the light. A film from dryer sheets can block air even when the screen looks clean.
  • Step outside while the dryer runs and feel for strong airflow at the vent flap.
  • On a gas dryer, make sure the gas valve behind the unit is open.

Keep it running longer

  • Empty the lint screen before every load.
  • Have the vent duct cleaned at least once a year, more often if it runs up to the roof.
  • Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, not white plastic or thin foil.
  • Keep the space around and behind the dryer clear of boxes and laundry piles.

Safety first. The U.S. Fire Administration names failure to clean as the leading cause of home dryer fires. If you smell burning, stop the dryer and unplug it.

Questions

Dryer repair FAQ

Do you work on gas and electric dryers?

Yes, both. For a gas dryer, say so when you book so the technician knows what to expect.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year, and sooner if drying times keep creeping up. Long runs to the roof clog faster.

Can I keep using a dryer that squeals?

For a short while. A squeal usually means a worn roller or idler pulley, and a snapped belt will stop the dryer altogether.

Why does my dryer heat only some of the time?

Heat that comes and goes often points to a thermostat or a gas valve coil that works cold and fails once warm. The technician can test for it during the visit.
