Won't heat
The display works, but the oven stays cold.
Ranges and wall ovens
Freestanding ranges, slide-ins and built-in wall ovens, gas and electric: we find out why the oven isn't heating right and agree on the repair before starting.
Symptoms
If dinner keeps coming out wrong, one of these is usually why.
The display works, but the oven stays cold.
It takes far longer than it used to reach temperature.
Cookies burn on the bottom or one side while the top stays pale.
Recipes come out under- or overdone at the right setting.
The door hangs crooked, or stays locked after self-clean.
You hear the oven click, but no flame appears.
Typical causes
Electric elements fail with a visible break or blister, or open up inside where you can't see it.
How we check it
We test each element for continuity and check the relays on the control board.
The igniter still glows but no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve.
How we check it
We measure the igniter's current draw and watch the valve on a call for heat.
A drifting sensor throws the temperature off; a blown fuse, often after self-clean, cuts power entirely.
How we check it
We measure sensor resistance against the real temperature and test the thermal fuse.

GE gas range
Problem: Took close to an hour to preheat.
Repair: The igniter glowed but drew too little current. Installed a new OEM igniter and checked preheat time.
Useful tips
Safety first. If you smell gas, don't turn on lights or the oven. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Questions
On gas ovens it's usually a weak igniter; on electric ones, a failing bake element or temperature sensor.
Not by itself, but the cycle runs very hot. If a part is already weak, that's often when it gives out.
Yes, single and double. Some have to come out of the cabinet, so give us the model when booking.
Often. A failing element, a convection fan or a sensor out of range can all cause it, and each one can be tested.
